New Local Air Conditioning Estimates (LACE) data from the Census is now available for 2023.

The data, “provides national to neighborhood estimates of households with and without air conditioning, closing a critical data gap for researchers, planners, and local governments working to better understand and address extreme heat risk.” Visit the Census site to learn more: https://www.census.gov/data/experimental-data-products/lace.html

For perspective: An estimated 2.5% of households in Census Tract 1507 (on the south side of Bexar County) don’t have A/C. With about 1,855 occupied housing units, that’s about 46 households trying to survive the Texas summer heat without an A/C.
  • Click on a census tract to view more details (including number of occupied housing units and percent with and without A/C)
  • Please note that census tracts for some of the rural counties are much larger than what you would see for Bexar County

  • The percentages for homes without A/C ranges between 0% (blue) and 4.1% (orange). While the numbers may seem small, they represent real households and families.
