Public Health Camp with UT Health San Antonio IIMS/SC AHEC

CINow was re-invited to participate in UTHealth San Antonio South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC)’s summer public health camp for high school students after participating in it last year. The camp is meant to introduce students (rising HS juniors and seniors) to the Public Health field and all of its elements.

CINow joined the camp to teach the students why and how data is important especially for positive community impact. We discussed data literacy and its basic elements using community examples and we gave them a demo of Bexar Data Dive (our online local data platform).

As part of the Camp, students are expected to complete a capstone project and this year the public health topics were influenced by the “Family Service Neighborhood Place” community and what they wished to learn more about. We helped the students find the data they needed using Bexar Data Dive and they used charts and graphs from Dive in their final presentations.

Thank you to everyone who was part of the Camp, it was fun to join y’all for a second year in a row and we’re excited to continue participating.

UT Health San Antonio hosts Public Health Camp on an annual basis, be sure to check the website for next year’s registration link! You can find this past summer’s registration link here: https://stahec.uthscsa.edu/events/public-health-camp-2024/.
