Census 2020: Federal resources at stake

Missing just one out of every 100 people in the 2020 Census doesn’t sound like a big deal, right? Wrong. Even a 1% undercount will cost Texas at least $300 million dollars. Complete and accurate data on the financial stakes for individual counties is hard to come by, but this visualization gives a sense of the scale of federal dollars Texas currently receives via many of the larger Census-guided programs. Know that the county-level figures are actually dramatic underestimates, because those figures represent federal dollars awarded to a single specific county. Not included in those numbers are large expenditures
that benefit multi-county areas (e.g., major highway construction) or that are eventually distributed to individual people (e.g., TANF) or organizations.
